The Education of the AI Composer: Automating Musical Creativity
نویسندگان
چکیده
Models of computational creativity promise to provide insight into the nature of human creative work and innovation. Intrinsically motivated, automated, creative agents present a potential avenue for the exploration of creativity in the arts, and in music in particular. A novel reinforcement learning agent designed to improvise music in a self-motivated fashion is described, formulated to prove the capabilities of an artificially creative musical system. The prototype employs unsupervised adaptive resonance theory algorithms to model theories of human perception, cognition, and creativity. While the generated results are constrained for initial evaluation further extensions suggest the potential to create meaningful, aesthetically valuable compositions.

Computer Models of Musical Creativity , MIT
Music and computers are natural partners. For centuries, music theory has been closely aligned with (and an important source of inspiration for) science and mathematics. Music compositions, however, are too large and complex to model mathematically, at least in practice. For the most part, science and mathematics diverged from music composition and developed independently—but then computers cam...
متن کاملComputational Modelling of Music Cognition and Musical Creativity
This chapter is about computational modelling of the process of musical composition, based on a cognitive model of human behaviour. The idea is to try to study not only the requirements for a computer system which is capable of musical composition, but also to relate it to human behaviour during the same process, so that it may, perhaps, work in the same way as a human composer, but also so tha...
متن کاملAlgorithmic composition as a model of creativity
There are two distinct types of creativity: the ash out of the blue (inspira-tion? genius?), and the process of incremental revisions (hard work). Not only are we years away from modeling the former, we do not even begin to understand it. The latter is algo-rithmic in nature and has been modeled in many systems both musical and non-musical. Algorithmic composition is as old as music composition...
متن کاملImitative Leadsheet Generation with User Constraints
We introduce the problem of generating musical leadsheets, i.e. a melody with chord labels, in the style of an arbitrary composer, that satisfy arbitrary user constraints. The problem is justified by the very nature of musical creativity, as many composers create music precisely by imitating a given style to which they add their own constraints. We propose a solution of this problem by formulat...
متن کاملUsing the Creative Process for Sound Design Based on Generic Sound Form
Building on recent research in musical creativity and the composition process, this paper presents a specific practical application of our theory and software to sound design. The BigBang rubette module that brings gestural music composition methods to the Rubato Composer software was recently generalized in order to work with any kinds of musical and non-musical objects. Here, we focus on time...
